Robb talks Superman Secret Origins!!

Superman Secret Origins #5 hit the stands last week, and much has been written and debated about by my peers. I usually jump right away and make my thoughts known before I’ve had time to absorb something over time. I was quick to praise Superman Returns, but had I given it some time, I feel I would have been a lot more critical. I still love the movie, but with time, I’m, able to see more of its true flaws. Avoiding the same mistake with Superman Secret origins, I was waiting for this series to end before I added my 2 cents, but after reading issue #5, I felt the time was now to voice my opinion.

To take on the task of retelling his origin story, a story that has been done over, time and time again, has to be intimidating. Especially for a character as iconic as Superman. There are few other characters that have  been molded and remolded to fit into modern times such as Batman, Woman Woman, James Bond, Captain America, Buck Rogers, The Lone Ranger, and Superman. What can a writer tell that hasn’t been told already?  How many ways can one write, “Stranger Visitor raised by mid-western farming couple… Powers beyond mortal man… Mild manner reporter at a… Truth, Justice, and the American way? Been there, done that… ten fold! What I can say is that Geoff Johns and Gary Frank are both masters of their craft and have done something really special here. They have merged the best traits of what made me like John Byrne’s Man of Steel, and Mark Waid’s Birthright to have the most fulfilling, and compact Origin of Superman. At this point, only issues one through five have hit the stands, and Secret Origins has covered Superman’s discovery in the field, the introduction to the Legion, the first days of employment at the Daily Planet and introduction to Lex Luthor. Each one of these “first”, found me getting goose bumps as if I was seeing a bit of history unfolding right before my eyes. We all know the major details of Kal-el’s plot to Clark, then to Superman, but the tiny moments between Superman and Jimmy having an awkward discussion about taking his picture, or Lois getting mad at Clark for showing signs of a backbone and relating to a parental situation, only to spill milk all over her to cover up a thoughtful revealing moment. Honestly, I feel like I’m looking into a DC History window and learning about the moments, in between the “big” moments. I really am enjoying this series. Read more »

Hulk Hogan Has an Important Message for Sinestro

via Topless Robot on 4/6/10

Well. Since I’m clearly drunk, drugged, dead, or have fallen into a nightmarish parallel universe — there’s obviously no way wrestling icon Hulk Hogan would tape a video message to members of a Green Lantern fansite/message board, let alone address villain Sinestro in our reality — I’m just going to quit for the day and keep drinking until I make sure I’m dead. See you tomorrow! Possibly! (Via Comics Alliance)

This week, they cover it all!

Robb:  I’m excited for Brightest Day!!!

Tracie:  With the reveal of the 12 Resurrected, all the Brightest Day changes are clicking in my mind. Plus all the new info DC’s been putting out.
I’m excited to see what it means for the 12, though I’m still iffy on if I’ll pick up Deathstroke’s Titans book, although I like that Osiris is back.

I’m even MORE excited to be reading JL: Generation Lost, BoP, Flash and Brightest Day than I already was!
http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/04/01/blackest-night-is-overwhat-is-brightest-day/

ALSO, Green Arrow is supposed to have a huge part in Brightest Day but I can’t figure out how. Johns says we’ll learn more in Brightest Day
#0 but Star City is supposed to be central to it.

Robb:  Are you getting the DC History book? DC Legacy I think its called. I’m a huge fan of those continuity layout type stories.  I’m nervous I’m getting pulled back in Marvel. Dark Reign, Seige, Thor… Now Xmen 2nd coming, All the Avenger titles… I’m loving Marvel’s stuff.  I’m also wanting a return to the classic JLA. You know, the original 7, plus Zantanna, Firestorm, Red Tornado, Atom, The Hawks, throw in an Arrow (Green or Red is ok) add Vixen and get a good creative team of Geoff Johns and Finch!  I’m happy with Aquamans return and Firestorm! I love those characters… Just give them good creative teams.

Tracie: Yes, I’m buying DC Legacy. They have an AWESOME line-up of artists and it’s been a while since I’ve ready any DC History type of thing.
Don’t be nervous about Marvel. Accept it. Embrace it. Marvel is good. Marvel is great. YOU WILL ACCEPT MARVEL AS YOUR PERSONAL SAVIOR.

I’m excited to see how Second Coming plays out, with all the excellent build-up that’s been done in Cable over the last couple years. And if
Sean can get me the missing books, I can have Kitty Pryde back! :D

Best art i’ve seen from David Finch, by the way. Hope DC puts him on something big.

Johns and Finch on JLA would be killer. There’ve been rumors for a while that Johns would take over JLA. At one point it was said Jim Lee
would draw it, but I doubt that’ll happen, as cool as it’d be to have the CCO and Co-Publisher on the same book. Finch would seem more
likely (and he seems to have inherited Jim’s inker in the move to DC, so there’s that).

I’m sure once War of the Superman wraps and Bruce returns we’ll see a big unveiling of a restructured Justice League with the Trinity
reinstated plus the reincarnated/refocused Aquaman, Hawks, Atom, Firestorm and such. (and hopefully a redeemed Green Arrow)
And you know I’m down for a Zatanna in my Justice League. ^_^ I’ll miss Jason as Firestorm. He made the character a lot more
interesting to me than Ronnie & Prof. Stein did. Plus it was great to have a really enjoyable (i.e. NOT ANGSTY) black character in comics.
Plus it seemed like they were really embracing him in animation by including him in Brave and the Bold. Hopefully this isn’t the end of Jason’s story, since it looked like Ronnie was rejected from Firestorm too. And yes, I would read the hell out of an Aquaman book with a strong
creative team like when they had Will Pfeifer/John Arcudi & Patrick Gleason. (though they weren’t Big Name enough to support the book)

Robb:  Agree with you totally, except… When you wrote: “Plus it was great to have a really enjoyable (i.e. NOT ANGSTY) black character in comics.”  Did you read the Firestorm Series with Jason… He punched his father every other issue. He was incredibly Angsty. Lol. Don’t get me wrong… I love Jason’s character. Felt like a less smart assy peter parker.  But he was totally angst ridden.

Tracie:  HAhah, good point. His dad deserved it, though.

And I guess I meant “angry” not “angsty.” Whatever problems in his life, at the end of the day he was still a good-natured kid and I loved that about him. He was the closest thing to a Peter Parker character i’d read in a DC book and thought that was a really great way to update that character. (I stopped reading when they changed writers, though,so i don’t know how the series ended)

I’ve never connected with Cyborg because he always seemed so down and mopey all the time and I like Steel but nobody really does anything
cool or fun with him. I loved Det. Crispus Allen but he’s a pretty depressing/angry character and I don’t think he’s even the Spectre anymore. I think he might be dead-dead now. Teen Titans has Static, but I’m so behind in that, I haven’t even read up to the issues where he’s on the team.

Robb:  Dang I wanted a debate… Even tried to pull Monty in. I agree, angry vs angst is good way to put it.

And I couldn’t agree with you more. Cyborg has never been handled right since Wolfman left the series way back when. And he doesn’t belong in the JLA.  Steel and Cripus have been let fall to the side, and Static has sooo much potential. Black lightining was great at first in Metzler’s JLA… But faded away too. My opinion, the best used “Black” DC character is Mr. Terriffic. Especially in this new JSA story. Tracie, its a good book again. Really playing up racism and superheros along with WWII tie in.

Didn’t know this discussion was going topical! :)

Tracie: ROBB AND TRACIE TACKLE THE TOUGH ISSUES. And DAMMIT STOP MAKING ME FEEL LIKE I NEED TO READ JSA AGAIN. UGGHHHH*hissyfit*  And call me a philistine, but I like the animated Teen Titans so much more than their comic counterparts. I could care less about comic Starfire but cartoon Starfire was so fun. Same with Cyborg and Raven and Beast Boy. (Robin is just Robin no matter how you slice it)
I like Donna and Dick stepping into the JLA but Cyborg isn’t necessary. Especially if they would just reassemble Red Tornado. (though I’m not much of a fan of “Reddy” outside of Young Justice, he’s been so boring and worthless in this iteration of JLA) I like Black Lightning in Outsiders more than JLA. Outsiders has been a surprisingly fun team. (I need to read the last 2 issues of Didio/Tan’s new run though… maybe over lunch)

Blackest Night Discussion – Spoilers for Blackest Night#8

Robb - Xmen 2nd coming was soo good, but I don’t want to get sucked back into the X world… But I must read this new event. What was your thoughts on BN#8?

Tracie – What a curiuos group of people to resurrect! I’m WAY BUMMED that Ralph and Sue were left out (and also that apparently Jason is no longer Firestorm and Kendra isn’t Hawkgirl) but Brightest Day is going to be very fascinating if it’s going to focus on such a peculiar assortment as Max Lord and Osiris. Max controlling Guy gave me chills.  Also it’ll be interesting to see classic Hawk teaming up with current Dove. (though I liked when Hawk & Dove were an all female team)

Now to wait and wonder who the real White Lantern will be.

TOTALLY UNRELATED LOST COMIC:
http://twitpic.com/1c3dzl
(all of Kate Beaton’s LOST comics are genius, you should follow her Twitter)

Robb – Anti Monitor is back too!  I thought maybe Ted Kord, would return too. Didn’t capt boomeranger jr. die in an Outsiders or Flash story? So they bring back senior? Huh, Ill bet we see random “other” resurrections like Supergirl’s dad or Copperhead, or whoever. Maybe Jason and Ronnie will merge and be a new Firestorm?

Tracie – It looked like both Jason AND Ronnie were ejected from Firestorm, somehow leaving only Professor Stein?
And Captain Boomerang Jr. didn’t get killed in Blackest Night Flash did he? Because he was alive in that and tricking D-List rogues into being meals for his undead father. Tim Drake’s gonna wanna have words with Boomerang Sr, though. They didn’t seem to indicate any additional ressurections, just those present in the book. And Johns is saying those characters were brought back for a specific reason which I believe is what the Brightest Day
series is meant to focus on, since they’re all featured on the cover (plus Hal). I think Ted Kord would’ve been an obvious choice which is probably why they didn’t do it. Trying to think, now, which deaths other than Hawk II and Damage are permanent. Was anyone else killed during Blackest Night that didn’t get a White Lantern ressurection?

Robb -Other none resurrections:  Alex luthor, dr light, sure there are more… (editor’s note… I mised understood what Tracie was saying… These characters died before Blackest Night)  Didn’t he get shoved in the hole or killed in Blackest night Flash 3? I may be wrong… Someone died in that issue. (editor’s note#2… Did some research, Owen was shoved into the hole at the end of BN Flash#3, with unrevealed results http://speedforce.org/2010/02/review-blackest-night-flash-3/ Tracie 1, Robb1)

Tracie – I’m gonna have to dig that issue back out because I’m not remembering that. Could be.
And I was thinking more along the lines of those killed DURING Blackest Night (Damage, Hawk) that didn’t survive.

Robb – Sodam Yat… We forgot about him… He’s in the sun right?!

Tracie – OH YEAH! There’s GOTTA be something brewing with Sodam.  And we know he doesn’t die because he’s alive in the 30th century. (and the prophecy and all that)
